Pardon Me While I Explode….

Once again in a continuing effort to save you my fair reader from wasting your hard earned money on bad movies I present to you now….. Tom’s Guide To May’s Movies for the Year 2009… (Please note this should only be used by people that live under or a rock or have a kid/kids)

Wolverine… ever wonder what a movie about the most “interesting” X-man would look like? No me neither till I saw this movie and came away feeling not so much punch but suckered out of $5

Star Trek… This movie has no business being as good as it is.  If you haven’t seen it stop reading this drivel and go see this movie now.

Angels and Demons…. Haven’t seen it yet… let me know!

Terminator Salvation…. Stunningly Average… more fun then Wolverine, no where near Star Trek, and the voice that Christan Bale uses for Batman isn’t just for Batman anymore.

A Night At The Museum…. I have a permanent ban on all movies that involve Ben Stiller except for “Dodge Ball” and “Tropic Thunder” and only because Vince Vaughn / Robert Downy Jr. are in each of those films respectively.

And at some point before the end of the month is out you may actually get a real update out of me… but I wouldn’t count on it.

In the event that…

You ever play the game “Left4Dead” with me… know that I have something of a reputation as a friendly fire maven.  As evidenced by the stats for one particularly “good”  round;

Most damage to teammates: 4,334 (on Expert)
Average damage to teammates: 140.00
So the lesson here boys and girls… Don’t get in front of me when I’m shooting at the undead.

Death to all but…

Ok the whole title from the song that is playing through whatever I’m using for music thing may need to stop… You have to admit that I do come up with some pretty intersting titles from time to time.

So the unfathomable has happened… I’ve found happiness…

With a cell phone

*que shock and awe*

The current phone is a Blackberry 8130 and it is the only phone that I have not wanted to throw to the trash heap with in 6 months of getting it for one reason or another.   It’s small, it’s fast, it has great audio for calls, texting and email are actually not cumbersome (most of the time).  I think the main killer app for this phone is Facebook mobile… I’m just a social networking whore though so that shouldn’t count (also the facebook mobile website is one of the better ones out there so even if the Blackberry didn’t have the mobile app facebook would be good)

What pains me is after a year of pretty much constant use the phone will die, if it’s slow or fast is up to the phone but it’s a fact it will die.

Which is where my condrum comes to play… I’m off contract with Vzw but I won’t leave them.. You know all of those commercials about how good the network is?

They are all true! (At least in the East Valley they are)

I’m 90% certain I’m going to stick with the Blackberry as a platform, I just don’t know the form factor… there is a flip pearl out there (updated version of what I have) but I’m not a fan of flip phones and it’s twice the thickness of the phone I have now.   I could bounce to a Curve it’s only slightly wider has a full keyboard and runs the same OS and hardware… which means it will be unsupported sooner rather then later.  The Storm would be a good phone if the damn interface were to be faster, but I still wouldn’t buy one since I have no love for touchscreen phones (iPhone included).   Which pretty much leaves with the 9630 (coming soon) It’s bigger then I want, but I’m willing to trade size for the upgraded features.  I just don’t know about the rest of the stuff.

I guess it’s a good thing my phone is still good and I have the extended warranty, at least I can use what I have until I can’t use it anymore!

Setting Sun…

Things that just make me smile… (yes it’s been known to happen)

Health Reports on equipment that say 119,874GB  Total capacity

Seeing 20,000 screaming soccer idiots in Seattle

musings of a back porch

Not playing gears of war

Grass so tall my sprinklers can’t quite get the water out totally over the top

Fridays (the day of the week)

not being on call

The Taco when I blow a porsche off the line (ok thats just me being a dick, and he had no clue I was going to do that either so I had surprise on my side)

Things that piss me off

The hiccups

beer that gives me the hiccups…

For all of those who were in K-town in the mid 90’s

And we only had Vegas Radio… I present to you now the best of the music (for the bad NIN rip off crap it was)… the videos themselves don’t hold up real well.

I’m sorry I have to apolgize I can’t help myself…

And the better of the two songs… (extra points if you can name the orginal artist and album… extra extra points if you get the irony)

Of course this one makes the other two look like fricken classics…

I would do more but I’ve made you suffer enough….

And the winner is…

OK so the big game is over… the Pro Bowl is done (not that I watched it) and I have finally coughed up a couple of boxes of Nilla Wafers so that some long running jokes can finally be put to bed…. or at the very least be made to suffer with a few other jokes that should have died along time ago… like “YOUR MOM!!”

Exactly…

I do have a couple of ponderous thoughts for you loyal readers this evening so won’t join me for a few moments and ponder these thoughts….

1. Why can I not get 2GB of RAM on a Windows XP based Dell netbook?   Just curious really I can get 2GB if I went with Ubuntu but that defeats the purpose of me getting a USB HD TV adapter and using the thing for tailgating next year.  Since all of the damn adapters only support Windows and not Linux… also note that this will probably be the only time you see me preferring Windows over anything.

2. How come there is no cheap pay as you go wireless data infrastructure?    I’m looking for 3G wireless data speeds and not wanting to pay $60 a month for it… I would like to do something similar to a pay as you go phone and only pay for data on days that I use it and when I pay for data I don’t want it to be a 10MB cap or something small like that I want it to be a 500MB or 1GB cap you know so I could actually get some work done if I had too.  Also I want said data network to cost me in the neighborhood of $5 a for 24 hours of usage and be reasonably reliable.

3.  I hate Phoenix sports writers… I don’t know if it’s just the teams this year but I seriously am starting to dislike all of them.

4.  Also my loathing of the MPAA and all thing that involve me not having control OVER MEDIA I LEGALLY PURCHASED WITH MY OWN MONEY… grew to new levels. So this has generally made me think that this is the only measure I can really take to make sure my stuff is open and compatible.

Its so right on sooo many levels.
It's so right on sooo many levels.

On Hell…. And it’s freezing over…

21 years…

Cardinals Fan 20 to 35 thousand would come out each week and watch the Cardinals… In game after game… sometimes they would show up and win… more often then not miss some little thing and lose the game.

21 years…

The Cardinals have been the Doormat for Arizona sports teams and the but of any number of jokes….

21 years….

The Cardinals always look good on paper but always were paper tigers..

21 years no more.

The slate is wiped clean… The sins of the past are now in the past…

Fitzgearls

We go to the superbowl… win or lose…

WE DO THIS TOGETHER!!

Where everyone goes WTF?

No doubt you have noticed the very Vista-esque theme?

I know it’s disgusting… but there is one reader who will like it…

Honestly it looks better the the Word Press Default theme and I just got tired of screwing with it all.

On the bright side I can once again attach images into posts…. but that’s less a function of the theme and more a function of me blowing away the old install and reloading everything.

Covers… sometimes they are worthy

I’m always keeping a eye out for TOOL covers… mainly because I really like the music (if you’ve ridden in my truck anytime in the last 3 years you know this already) and also it seems like they are rarely covered well.

I’ve found two covers that I think do the orginal song justice…. I think…

Staind \”Sober\”

And a acoustic version gotta give it a minute Aaron Lewis \”Sober\” Acoustic

and it would appear that I cannot embed you tube video… now that sucks.

Shoes and bad weather….

You know this whole thing about being one of three people who believe in the Cardinals every year is, when they are on a roll people truly think they are on a roll.  And when they flop two things happen;

1. People go “Oh hey there are those lovable losers the Cardinals”!

2. People like me who talk shit about the opponent of the week end up receiving it twice as worse on Monday.

Yes it’s going to be a long Monday and if San Diego loses tomorrow night against the NY Bretts I’m really not going to be happy.  I mean it’s one thing for the Cardinals to be 0-3 to start the season it’s almost unthinkable for the Chargers to be 0-3.  Though after last years rough start they did make it to the AFC championship game where they lost to the Patriots who lost to the Dolphins this week who lost the Cardinals last week… So in some cosmic sense that probably means something but I’ve not had nearly enough beer tonight to even begin thinking about what that might be.

That is a question for minds greater then my own.

Now on to things that I might actually be able to do something about.

Last year I traded in my rather shitty Cisco / Scientific Atlanta 8300 HD Cable box for the sublime bliss that is a TiVo HD.   And through the power of the Internet and upgrades to the operating system the TiVo has been coming out with new features.  The latest of which is the ability to watch youtube videos on my 52 inch HD tv.  You know because youtube videos need to be watched in 52 inches of HD.  Another feature is the hook into the Amazon video no demand service for downloading pay content of TV shows and Movies as well as free Promo content (think pilots and season premieres) right off the top these are two things that I couldn’t do with my former cable box nor could I transfer shows to my desktop computer and then to another device to watch later.

So why am I writing about this? Well the question hit me recently downloading TV shows is pretty common now with iTunes and Amazon video on demand.  Which if I like the show I have no problem paying for a copy that I can keep and watch when I want to how I want to (though we aren’t quite to that point yet we are finally making progress).  Now what we need is a TiVo hook into Hulu.com which has tv shows for free for you to watch on the internet.  And these are shows that are meant to be watched in 52 inches of HD glory.  I will admit there are a couple of shows that I want to check out (Fringe, Doll House, Sanctuary) but I don’t want to record them on my TiVo since I feel that commits me on some level to watching them and I have enough crap being recorded on there and I’m pushing up against the space limits as it is in my TiVo Box.  So I guess my next great hope for TiVo is to figure out a way to get Streaming programs with their associated commercials (like 5 minutes per 43 minutes of program) to stream to my TiVo… I don’t want to buy them but I do want to watch them.

So now to circle this back around… NBC has their web strategy all wrong… at least for as far as I can tell.

First during the Olympics they made you download Microsoft Silverlight to watch the competition online.  Which great and all, but I don’t have that crap loaded on my either my PC or MAC and I just want to watch Michael Phelps and the Redeem Team kick some ass.

Second I was watching tonight’s Sunday Night NFL game between the Packers and Cowboys on TV and decided to check out the webcast of it.  It was alright the raw feeds from the other cameras on the field are a nice touch to bad you have to sit through a commercial to get to it, sit through the commercials during the main game broadcast and if you get to click happy on the extra cameras guess what else you get?  Yep another commercial.  So really my only incentive to watch the webcast is to make sure I see every commercial possible.

Finally, in NBC’s infinite wisdom it has taken product placement to a whole new level and for as far as I can tell the only reason any of this is going on is because NBC has no clue.  Some examples of this are Eureka on Sci-Fi (which is a wholly owned subsidiary of NBC-Universal) whose whole third season is being sponsored by Degree Deodorant (to the point that a “experimental new formula” was a key component in solving the problem of the week in one episode (my two suns).

And then there’s “Knight Rider” I expect a certain amount of cheese, but this is bordering on the absurd.  First there is the obligatory Ford product placement in the new KITT (the Mustang VS the Old Trans AM)… but wait there’s more KITT has a new mode it’s called F-150 mode!  So not only is NBC killing a tv show that I remember fondly as a child, but they are also turning the car into a transformer.  The only way it could have been better is if another one of the new modes was “Expedition Mode with environmentally friendly and carbon neutral diesel hybrid engine” oh wait I may have given away a key plot point to a future episode.

No wonder the writers striked if I had to deal with this crap I would want more money too.

Also you may have noticed that I’ve taken the approach of calling several things out by explicit name this evening… Well this is my attempt at a Google Bomb.  Maybe just maybe if I put enough pop culture geek references then maybe someone other then my 3 loyal readers will read this.  Or NBC-Universal is going to be making a call to their sister company GE Nuclear Weapons and Microwaves and “take care of the trouble maker in Phoenix”
